The meaning behind our logo

The caduceus symbolises the medical professional. The rays are the grace and blessing of God, received by those who care for the sick. The open hands are the community in need, to whom that same grace is carried forward.

Life in its abundance

Assisi Atonement Hospital, Perumpuzha, Kollam, has served this community since 1968. What began as a modest dispensary — one visiting doctor and two nursing assistants — was officially inaugurated by the then Transport Minister, Mr. R. Balakrishna Pillai, on 11 November 1969. Today it is a 100-bedded specialty hospital with a standing as one of the best in the district across every field of health care.

The hospital has been registered under the Travancore–Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act, 1955, since 1 November 1989, and its management and control are vested in the Governing Body. It is run by the Trivandrum Province of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Imitation of Christ, which brought to the healing ministry of Christ a holistic approach: to relieve suffering, to promote and preserve the health of the community, and to give selfless, dedicated service in the true spirit of Jesus Christ.

The hospital is NABH Entry Level Certified, and works to the standards of patient safety and quality that certification requires.

Our casualty runs 24 hours a day, backed by a dual-slice CT scanner and consultants across twenty specialties.

We are empanelled with MEDI-SEP, CGHS and ECHS, and with most major health insurers and third-party administrators, so that treatment here is within reach of government employees, ex-servicemen and insured families alike.

History of Assisi Atonement Hospital

Introduction

Assisi Atonement Hospital has a history of 59 years of service in the field of health care. While looking forward it reveals to us a success story of growth and achievement. It is made possible with God’s grace and whole-hearted support from sister concerns and other benefactors.

Historical background

The Assisi Atonement Hospital was started in 1967 by Rev. Fr. Cuthbert OFM Cap. at Perumpuzha, Kollam, to take up health care of the locality with a visiting doctor and two nursing assistants. The dispensary was officially inaugurated by the former Transport Minister, Mr. R. Balakrishna Pillai, on 11 October 1969. On 11 October 1971, His Grace the Most Rev. Benedict Mar Gregorios, the late Archbishop of Trivandrum, blessed the institution. The former Revenue Minister, Mr. Baby John, inaugurated the function and the Deputy Speaker, Mr. R. S. Unni, presided.

The hospital is registered under the Travancore Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act, 1955, on 1 November 1989, and the management and control of the society is vested in the Governing Board consisting of 9 members. The Congregation of the Sisters of the Imitation of Christ is managing this hospital. The Congregation plays an important role in the fields of education, health care, social welfare and development of the community. In order to take part in the healing ministry of Christ, the Congregation paid much attention to health care: to provide relief to the suffering, to promote and preserve the health of the community and to give selfless and dedicated service to humanity in the true spirit of Jesus Christ.

We, the management of Assisi Atonement Hospital, believe in transferring the love of God by providing competent and comprehensive health care to all who seek its service. Every patient should receive optimum health care in an environment of concern, comfort and understanding irrespective of caste, creed, colour or religion. We function as a charitable, non-profit-making and voluntary institution by providing free and part-pay care to those who deserve it, and co-operate with other health care delivery systems of the country and state. While emphasising a primary commitment to the patients, we also recognise a commitment to all our employees, expressed in continuing concern for their welfare and development. We assure the quality of service through periodic evaluation. We will motivate our employees through encouraging and recognising their work, rewards for the task performed, incentives and various remunerations.

The past 59 years have been a period of growth and development filled with an abundance of grace and blessings. All at Assisi Atonement Hospital feel the joy and happiness of realising our goals and objectives through dedicated and humble service in the field of health care. The Congregation realises its objectives through this missionary activity, continuing the healing ministry of Jesus through the generous work of all involved, especially the Director, Administrator, doctors and all the staff. All these years we have had the full support of the locality in our work. We look forward to God’s blessings for the continuance of the ministry in a generous manner.

Who we belong to

Congregation of the Sisters of the Imitation of Christ

The Congregation of the Sisters of the Imitation of Christ was founded by His Grace the Servant of God Mar Ivanios in 1925, in the Jacobite Church “Sanyasam” — the idea of a dedicated religious life for women was unknown in the Malankara Church until then. With the Founder, the whole Congregation — the ten members of the community — re-united with the Catholic Church in 1930.

Bethany, an active Congregation, lays emphasis on liturgical life as a life of prayer and contemplation. The spiritual upliftment of the Malankara Catholic Church is the primary objective of the Congregation, which was given pontifical status in 1956.

Since the re-union the Congregation has grown rapidly. There are five provinces — Trivandrum, Tiruvalla, Bathery, Pathanamthitta and Muvattupuzha — under one Mother General. The Sisters work in India and abroad, and the Generalate is in Kottayam.
